** Find an overseas project for your family **

The Story:

There are an increasing number of web based databases that can help you locate a project suitable for your family.  These are not SixSeeds Partner projects so we cannot vouch for any opportunity listed on these sites.  Please investigate on your own (and let us know what you find!).

Cross-Cultural Solutions has an excellent listing of family volunteer options that are overseas.

The Volunteer Family provides a listing of family service options (many of them overseas) that can be combined with family vacations.  One example cited on the site is working with Habitat for Humanity sites abroad.

Global Volunteers, called "the granddaddy of the volunteer vacation movement by USA Today," also has opportunities listed by regions of the world.  Many of them are quite family friendly, especially for older children.

The Family Travel Network is a general travel site but it has a helpful article on family service trips and some leads.

The Christian tradition has long included sending families on short term mission trips that involve a great deal of practical service.  World Servants provides a database on mission trips that includes "family" and "intergenerational" as two search options.  Select Mission Trips and then Types on the main navigation bar.  InterVarsity Christian Fellowship is running a pilot trip for its alumni families that is promising.  Here's a description of its 2008 trip.  Sherpa Trips is a startup ministry that takes individuals and families on a variety of overseas service experiences.

How you can help:

If you find other helpful web resources like these, please contact us and we'll post them here as well.

Idea for your own family:

As mentioned, we cannot vouch for any of the options you'll find on these sites, so please do due diligence.  A trip can be a wonderful - and stressful - experience, so if you're new to it, we recommend starting with shorter durations and to locales closer to your home.  You especially want to build within your kids the sense that serving together is an enjoyable experience.
